Seminar Instructors

One of the following speakers will be your instructor:

Russell Brown
P.E., Ph.D., is Professor of Civil Engineering at Clemson University
He currently chairs the Allowable Stress Design Subcommittee of the Masonry Standards Joint Committee. He also chairs the Main Committee, ASTM C-15 on Manufactured Masonry Units. He is a Founding Member and member of the Board of Directors of The Masonry Society. He has written many papers on behavior and
design of masonry structures and components, and several of the current code provisions are based on his research. He teaches a course in structural design of masonry structures and has conducted over 50 seminars on the masonry design code, the Masonry Designer’s Guide and other masonry-related topics.
Evaluations of his seminars by the participants often include comments such as, “ easy to understand,
practical, good sense of humor, made a difficult subject easy to follow, kept my interest.” He is one of two coauthors of the software being distributed at this seminar.


James Nelson, Jr.
P.E., Ph. D., is Professor
and Chairman of Civil Engineering at Clemson University
Registered in four states as a professional engineer, Dr. Nelson is a member of ICBO, ASCE and the SAFE Association. Before pursuing a fulltime
academic career, he worked for several years as a design engineer with Brown & Root, Exxon and the
Offshore Company in Houston, Texas. He has written software for inclusion in three textbooks written by Jack
McCormac on Structural Analysis, Reinforced Concrete Design and Structural Steel Design. Dr. Nelson is one of two co-authors of the software being distributed at this seminar.
