The BAC - CCMA - NCMCA "Lump-Sum" Masonry Specification 

Section 04200 – Unit Masonry

Part 1: General

A.      The work of this section shall be bid and provided as a single lump sum Subcontract.  (Square foot/unit pricing of masonry labor and General Contractor furnished materials is not permitted)  The Masonry Subcontractor shall be a firm who specializes in masonry construction and shall furnish all materials, equipment and labor required to complete the required masonry construction for this project.

B.     The General Construction Work Bidder/Contractor shall furnish a letter from its masonry subcontractor’s bonding company, certifying their intent/assurance to provide a bond for this project.  Masonry subcontractor shall be bonded (under the General Contractor’s construction bond) and shall not function as a broker, but shall perform the work of this section with its own forces.  The bidder for General construction Work shall provide (evidence of compliance) bonding company's certification letter (included with his bid or within 3 calendar days after bid due date).  If the Owner chooses to require the Masonry Subcontractor to be additionally bonded (General Contractor’s bond is still required regardless), the Owner will pay for the Masonry Subcontractor’s bond.

C.     Definition: Lump sum masonry subcontractor shall be a firm specializing in masonry construction work and shall have been in the masonry construction business for at least 5 years.  Sub-sub contracting of masonry work is discouraged, if allowed the masonry subcontractor shall be responsible for the performance of its sub’s and shall continually supervise and inspect their work.  The masonry subcontractor shall have a superintendent and crew chiefs (from its own staff) on site supervising the work whenever work is in progress.  General contractors with separate masonry subcontracting divisions within their companies will not automatically qualify as masonry subcontractors.

Special Requirements

A.    Provide labor, materials, and equipment necessary for complete installation of unit masonry, including the installation of rigid cavity insulation, as show on the Drawings and specified herein, and water repellant treatment of brick and masonry surfaces.

B.    Work installed under this Section, but materials or products furnished under the following Divisions or Sections:

1. Masonry Mortar furnished under the work of Section 04100 contained herein.
2. Anchor bolts, steel plates and steel lintels: refer to Section 5 contained herein.
3. Installation of lintels indicated on the Drawings shall be included under the work of this section.
4. Wood bucks and nailing blocks: refer to Section 06100.
5. Door and window frames: refer to Section 8.
6. Louver and vents: refer to Section 15.

  C. Cooperate with other trades requiring items of equipment or services to be installed within or in  
        conjunction with Unit Masonry Work.
